When you stop naming things, stop telling stories, and just STOP and BE STILL, the power of God will raise you up into His Presence, and as you are lifted outside of time and space into the light, which A Course in Miracles calls “a holy instant”  – your past and stories and grievances and conflict all disappear as you move into the Presence of God. The darkness literally burns and dissolves and disappears. This is purification.

But here is the difficulty, what almost everyone does, when they “come back” from that instant spent outside of time, they don’t realize they left, they don’t realize their story and grievances dissolved and burned and disappeared, and immediately the mind picks up the old story (even though it’s not there) and starts to think about it again and make it real.

But it’s not there, unless you pick it up.

When you “leave the world” you enter into the Presence of God and if you “come back” – you will find yourself back here in the world again in a body – but now you are clean of all old ideas. You’re in a body, but now it’s all different because you are living in the Presence of God – you become “a light in this world which Heaven gratefully acknowledges as its own”

You left, sprung into Heaven, and as you left all your ideas of littleness and darkness dissolved in the light which is God, and now you’re back.

Don’t pick up the thread of your old story. Let something wholly brand new be revealed to you. This can be a  place of great intense discomfort temporarily because in the clean empty space when you return you’ll feel peace and quiet and it can be such a new experience, so unknown, that there is a tendency to want to fill it with noise and conversation again. But if you just remain still, empty, not knowing, trusting, the Divine will enter into you. Something new will occur.

But mostly people never give this a chance. They immediately start filling that empty space with ideas, thoughts, plans, grievances, stories from the past. It’s like a new house, people immediately want to start moving in furniture, but I have discovered that if I just take my hands off the wheel and TRUST and not start filling a space with my plans and old furniture, God fills the space in a much more magnificent way than I could ever have conceived. If only I just remain still.

To have the courage to stand in the discomfort and just be there, quiet, still, trusting, allowing.

People are so used to (by habit) of thinking that life goes on sequentially, past, present and future with no break in the continuity – that it’s practically impossible for people to think that every single moment is brand new with no link of memory to the past. But you are so powerful as a creation of God, that you have the power to pick up the thread of the story which the miracle dissolved and then in unconsciousness you put the pieces back together again. That’s a fairly extraordinary ability if you think about it – that you can remember all the details and keep replaying them when they are not even there!

And when you do this, the result is conflict and doubt, and you are doing this to yourself. Why would you pick up a grievance or story again if you don’t want it?

If you were aware that this is what you were doing, you wouldn’t do it anymore.

The cord has been cut. Your past is over. There is no link of it between where you are now and the past or future. It’s gone, it’s over. The miracle HAS occurred.

Now the practice is: LET IT GO. Don’t pick up the story again. Don’t pick up the fear. It dissolved when you left time and space in that holy instant. You’ve been disconnected from all the misery and pain, and if you think you are still in it that’s only because your mind still is attracted to conflict and so you keep remembering the stories from the past – because they are like a drug to someone addicted to conflict – and you will always get what you want.

But the stories and problems are not there. You keep putting them there. You’ve been disconnected from the world and past and reconnected to God. If you are still in pain, it’s nothing more than your desire to make up images and think them real.

Look at it. Insanity at it’s highest. Why would you keep picking up the story if you’ve been disconnected from it?

YOU LEFT THE WORLD OF PAIN AND SORROW AND SICKNESS AND GUILT AND LITTLENESS.

You left the frame of time and space, just for an instant, but it happened.

YOU ASKED TO ENTER INTO GOD’S PRESENCE AND YOU DID.

And everything that kept you in pain disappeared in that instant.

When you come back, come back as God created you with full awareness of WHO YOU ARE. Eternal, joy, love, light, whole. That’s all. Don’t pick up the fragments anymore. They disappeared when you entered into His Presence. This course is simple.

The cord has been cut. The past is over. The slate is clean.
